Two stars in uncomfortably close quarters. The larger has swollen past its Roche lobe; its outer atmosphere spills through the inner Lagrange point, arcs ballistically, and strikes the accretion disk of its white-dwarf neighbour — where the impact burns bright and, periodically, ignites.
